About the project

Virtual database "Water mills"

in 2018 At the end of 2009, the Public Enterprise "Cultural Heritage Conservation Forces", implementing the project "Virtual database "Watermills" supported by the Lithuanian Council of Culture, presented the website of Lithuanian windmills. This website is an updated version of the database of Lithuanian windmills created by the "Cultural Heritage Conservation Forces" in 2009. version that combines different types of mills.

in 2024 At the end of 2018, the Public Enterprise "Cultural Heritage Preservation Force" once again updated the website design, adapted it for mobile devices and added new photos and functions.

Collected and systematized information about the surviving water mills of Eastern Lithuania. At the beginning, a cartographic analysis was carried out based on the old maps, which are compared with the current areas in the GIS system. Potential locations where mills could have been identified were inspected on site. Information was collected on 100 suspected watermill sites, but only 70 were found to have survived on the spot.

Discovered places of water mills are recorded in photographs, measured, recorded details, their drawings are created, archival material, historiographical written and oral information about former mills, old photos are collected. Aerial photofixation with a flying remote control device was carried out at the sites of the surviving mills. The accumulated multifaceted information will facilitate and guarantee a more accurate restoration process of these cultural heritage values in the future.

After preparing the list of water mills, descriptive texts, site plans and photos, the information was digitized and an online virtual database of Water Mills was created. This database is linked to the Windmills Database, the Immovable Cultural Heritage Register data, which has been supplemented with updated information and presents in detail the valuable properties of watermills. Convenient search by mill names, place names and interactive maps makes it easy to plan a route, find nearby or simply interesting mills.
